Blessing of the Backpacks

We have finally arrived at what might be the most dreaded week of the year. At least for those between the ages of 5 & 18. The first week of school. Growing up, first week of school always brought on a strange combination of fear and excitement. As a minister, I still kind of feel the same way.

The start of school is like a second chance at a new year. Life begins to fall back into a routine. Things get a little more predictable. Vacations start to settle down.  At church, chairs begin to fill back up. In the community people start coming together for sporting events, open houses, and choir concerts. Life begins to fall back into rhythm as people start to live life together once more.

Ask any pastor and I bet he will tell you that he is glad to see the first week of school. Few things have as big of an impact on families and their availability as does the start of school. Ask any pastor and he will also tell you that he hopes his church can have equally as big of an impact on the school.

Today we are talking about our responsibility to demonstrate God's love. If the church were to focus its efforts to demonstrate God's love in one direction, would there be any more strategic place to do so than our schools? Over the course of the school year, the schools will bring in students, teachers, workers, business leaders, parents, grandparents, former students, ….... and the list goes on. Where, other than Wal-Mart, will you see all of those people? A church that can figure out how to love their schools well has figured out how to love their community well.

Today we begin our efforts at doing such with our “Blessing of the Backpacks.” We want to begin the school year by praying for, loving and supporting our people who will walk the halls of our schools everyday. We want to commission them to demonstrate God's love to their campus. We want to pray that God will use this year to accomplish His will in their life, and we want to pray that God will use their life to accomplish His will in their school this year.
